The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) or just the Ninja Turtles are a group that consists of four bipedal intelligent humanoid talking turtles, who practice ninjutsu and various Japanese martial arts. They are guided by their sensei Splinter, who is a bipedal humanoid talking rat.
The franchise was created in November 1983 by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. The first comic debuted in May 1984, and was published by Mirage Studios.
The turtles are named Donatello, Leonardo, Michelangelo and Raphael. Each turtle wears a bandanna of specific colour, except in the Mirage Comics, where all four turtles wear red bandannas. The turtles also carry different weapons.
